Com.Lalchand Sahu, our Party’s most senior and respected leader in the Palamu-Chatra-Garhwa region of south Bihar passed away on 8 November 1997. Com.Sahu was suffering from illness for a long time.

He had just returned from Varanasi where he was an observer to the Party Sixth Congress. Com.Sahu joined the revolutionary ranks in early 70s in Punpun and Dhanarwa region of rural Patna. In one of the most difficult times, when almost the entire first rank of the Party’s leadership was wiped out by police, Com.Sahu reorganised the movement at the height of police repression.

He was arrested during emergency and later released in 1978. Following his release Com.Sahu began work in the Chatra-Gaya region. He was instrumental in starting Party’s work in south Bihar districts of Chatra, Palamu and Garhwa.

A widely respected party leader among the masses as well as the broad sections of left and democratic forces, Com.Sahu led a very simple life. Despite suffering for long from illness, Com.Sahu selflessly worked for the Party till the end.

Red Salute to Com.Lalchand Sahu!

Surendra Prasad Kushwaha, who had been elected a delegate to this congress and who was a popular TU leader in Rohtas district was killed by management’s goons while addressing a workers meeting on 21.9.1997. That 10000 people mobilised in a sharp retaliatory protest on the spot was a measure of his popularity.
