Comrade Nagbhushan Memorial Meetings
Tireless Crusader for Broad Left Unity

 

The legacy of Comrade Nagbhushan Patnaik continues to stir communists all over the country. In the past one month following his death on 9 October, various memorial meetings organised all over the country evoked large participation especially from leaders amd cadres from other left parties.

In Hyderabad, more than 500 gathered for a memorial meeting held on 3 November. The speakers at the meet were Vinod Mishra, CH Rajeshwar Rao, leader of the CPI legislative group in Andhra assembly, Y Sambsisva Rao, state secretariat member of CPI(ML) New Democracy, NV Krishnaiah, central committee member of CPI(ML) Janshakti and a former MLA, APCLC leader MT Khan, revolutionary poet Jwalamukhi and noted Lohiaite activist Keshav Rao Jadhav. In his speech Vinod Mishra said that Comrade Patnaik’s tireless mission was to build unity of a broad spectrum of left forces on the basis of a common minimum agenda especially against the communal-fascists so that the left can emerge as the independent third pole in the present day national politics.

Please accept the deepest condolences from the Democratic Socialist Party on the death of Comrade Nagbhushan Patnaik. We only heard today of this sad event, and send to all his and our comrades in the CPI(ML) our sincere regrets. His death is a great loss to the whole left, and to the whole peasant and working class movement in India. But a comrade such as Nagbhushan Patnaik serves as an inspiration not only to the new generation of Indian revolutionaries, but also to revolutionary activists around the

world, through his life of commitment, principle, struggle and sacrifice for the cause of a communist future.

May his memory live on through our common struggles for the liberation of humanity.

A memorial meeting was organised in Calcutta on 26 October with the participation of leaders and activists from various left forces like CPI, RSP, FB, SUCI, CPI(ML) ND, CPI(ML) Janshakti, PCC-CPI(ML), COI(ML). Ex-finance minister and noted economist, Ashok Mitra also spoke on the occasion. Kartik Pal, West Bengal state secretary and DP Buxi, politburo member of CPI(ML) also spoke on the occasion.

In Patna, a memorial meet was held on 17 October at the IMA Hall. Political leaders from across the spectrum and prominent intellectuals attended the meet and also spoke on the occasion. Among those who addressed were Jalaluddin Ansari, CPI state secretary, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, CPM state secretary, Kapil Dev Singh, General Secretary of Samajwadi Party, Amriteshwar Chakravarty, state secretary of SUCI, noted economist Prof.Pradhan.H.Prasad, Basant Chowdhury of CPI(ML)-OC, Nand Kishore of CPIML)-NI, and Mahboob Alam of Bhartiya Momeen Front. Veteran communist leader, Taqui Rahim presided over the meeting. KD Yadav, state spokesperson of CPI(ML), Central Committee Members Ram Jatan Sharma and Saroj Chaubey, and Kamlesh Sharma, spoke on behalf of the Party.
